Morristown bike plan rolling forward
This month, Morristown is officially initiating the development of a bicycle plan for our town. On February 21, the Morristown Environmental Commission is holding the first Bicycle Planning Steering Committee Meeting to develop a vision for bicycling in Morristown and identify what needs to be in the Bicycle Plan. The Steering Committee includes representatives from the Town Council, the Planning Board, The Morristown Partnership, and citizen representatives for the four wards. We still need someone to represent the 2nd Ward. Last year, the Environmental Commission held a preliminary public meeting to educate the public about bicycle facilities that are possible in Morristown. We also conducted a survey of approximately 300 people on bicycle and pedestrian use in Morristown.
State of the Swoosh: Nike forges ahead
Slingshot irons that look pregnant; square drivers rather than pear-shaped ones; and its new all-green IC putter. (The color of the head is designed to blend with putting surfaces and provide a stark contrast to its white alignment aid; Nike Inc.'s staff ophthalmologist, who helped invent Nike's Maxsight distortion-free sports contact lenses, assisted with the putter's design.) Nike doesn't even package golf balls conventionally, preferring to sell dozens in cube-shaped boxes rather than flat, rectangular ones. Don't expect Wood to apologize. Frankly, he doesn't give a damn. “The minute we try to appeal to every single person out there or even care what they say, all respect, we're dead," Wood says. “It's not how you can run your business." Alienating the Establishment isn't a road often traveled by golf entrepreneurs, which underscores again just how different Nike Golf is.
Helmet hoopla alive on slopes; Protective headgear remains optional ...
The debate over whether ski helmets are necessary and should be mandatory remains a hot issue in the dead of winter on area ski slopes. On any given day, skiers can put themselves in harm's way, but that doesn't mean they all wear protective equipment. Erica Stewart has been skiing since she was four years old and not once has she worn a helmet. "I don't do anything crazy enough to need one," said Stewart, 25, during a recent ski day at Snow Valley, near Barrie. "I'm a conservative skier, which means I go slow." While she doesn't wear a helmet, Stewart said they are a good idea and admitted she probably should wear one. Matt Sgro, also 25, just purchased a helmet. He wanted to hit the snow park at Snow Valley to try some jumps and tricks on the pipes.

Oconee County police blotter
Damage: On Feb. 15, deputy William Elrod was dispatched after 6 p.m. to meet with the owner of some forested land off Rockingwood Drive. The man showed Elrod where someone had destroyed a deer curtain valued at $400. Elrod thought the damage was done by either a sword or machete and he could see a path cut to the site in the woods, apparently with the same blade. Elrod followed the hacked path to the back of a home on Spartan Lane. He went to the front door, which was open. Elrod announced his presence, but no one answered the door, so he entered to see if anyone was inside. In a bedroom, he saw a large sword with bits of tree sap still on the blade. Elrod secured the home, then returned to the crime scene to speak to the property owner. After returning to the scene of the crime, the deputy could see headlights pulling up to the house on Spartan Lane, so Elrod returned and introduced himself to the man and his teenage son.
