NBA Celtics rally dooms Blazers

The low point came in Friday's 99-87 loss against the lowly Seattle Supersonics in which Portland shot just 37 percent from the field.

"We're upset that we are losing, but we've been in this situation before at the beginning of the year when we were losing tons of games," Blazers guard Steve Blake said. "We just have to find a way to fight through it."

In the first quarter Portland looked like it had broken out of its slump as the starting lineup of Blake, Jarrett Jack, Joel Przybilla, LaMarcus Aldridge and Roy seemed to gel.

Right off the opening tip, Aldridge and Jack each drained jump shots. Roy scored twice, including on a 3-pointer to give Portland a quick 12-6 lead.

Portland shot 3 of 6 from three-point range in the quarter. And the offense looked crisp, with Aldridge and Jack each scoring six points and Roy and Przybilla each scoring five.

In 1980, the city of Spokane lost its innocence. A rapist, preying mostly on woman living on the city's South Hill, had police frustrated as the mounting toll of victims began to attract media attention. The perpetrator was recast as the South Hill rapist and panic began to descend on the city. Finally in the spring of 1981 a break in the case led to the arrest of Frederick "Kevin" Coe whose father happened to be the managing editor of the Spokane Daily Chronicle newspaper. After two trials and having served 25-years in prison, Coe is scheduled to be released this September. Now state prosecutors are looking at filing a civil case that could keep Coe behind bars for the rest of his life.

Students intern for Southeast Como

With the help of an internship at the Southeast Como Improvement Association, Juetten said she is working on projects for the community while fulfilling a credit for her major.

The University's urban studies program requires students to intern before graduating, said Paula Pentel, urban studies coordinator of undergraduate advising.

"It's designed to help students curious about cities put together a degree program that meets their interest," she said.

If a student doesn't like an internship, said Pentel, he or she can still learn from it.

"They may learn through this that it does or doesn't fit for their own personal values and for their own skill sets," Pentel said.

The SECIA has three interns this semester and has had consistent help from interns in the University's urban studies department since 2001, said James De Sota, Southeast Como neighborhood coordinator.

1/1 PSD protects commander, views change

The Marines of PSD have driven more than 9,800 miles, averaging around 104 miles a day while moving at about 15 miles per hour. On several occasions the Marines have visited every single firm operations base in the battalion's region in one day. The Marines have traveled nearly every road there is in the Habbaniyah and Fallujah area. Because of PSD's constant exposure and view of the area of operations, Hubbard said it has given him the opportunity to see the progress made by 1st Bn., 1st Marines, also known as the "ready to fight" battalion. .

City Council seeks fresh start with Nutter

City Council starts work this morning with three newcomers and the holdovers eager for a fresh start with the new administration.

New initiatives expected today include James F. Kenney's bill to allow nonresidents to apply for Civil Service jobs; W. Wilson Goode Jr.'s proposal to phase out the vilified gross-receipts tax; and Darrell L. Clarke's renewed call to explore retail uses for City Hall's public areas.

They all coincide with Mayor Nutter's agenda of a more professional government with a sensible tax structure and an open City Hall. Today, Nutter is expected to ask for more than $20 million in transfers - to the school district, information systems, and the law department, among others - held by Council at the end of the Street administration.

Nutter has yet to request transfer of $34 million for the Department of Human Services.
