Her company employs a variety of tools: Pulse surveys and podcasts, blogs and intranets, speechwriting and social networking.

The outcomes: Managers gain useful information from employees on emerging trends and can quickly address issues to improve productivity. Employees understand the company .

Want to park on double yellows but don't want to get towed?

Clearly frustrated, all the council workers could do was ticket Mr Love - for at least the 75th time this year.

As reported by The Herald earlier this month, Mr Love and the council have effectively been at war for some time. The millionaire parks one of his cars illegally almost every day - and then happily pays the fine. Officials, however, believe his vehicles cause an obstruction and are determined to stop him.

A council spokeswoman yesterday said: "The council is committed to stamping out illegal parking in the city. This individual is not exempt and we will not be deterred from taking appropriate action."

The authority, moreover, has a cunning plan. Parking officials will soon take receipt of two monster trucks of their own, each strong enough to tow any rogue parker, however big.

Eric Margan and his Red Lions not taking ordinary approach to music

Talk with Eric Margan, the 21-year-old brainchild behind The Red Lions, and he might talk about how he's flattered when his work is characterized as a sort of contemporary chamber music — a thoughtfully arranged amalgam of sounds that happens to be fit for a rock club.

He'll talk about how he writes out the sheet music for the rest of The Red Lions, but dismisses the notion that this approach is high-brow, saying it's merely the most efficient way to get the band to learn a song. And he'll talk about how his guitar belongs in a spot not typical when considering the recent history of popular music.

“I never wanted the guitar to be the backbone," Margan says during an interview last week at a coffeehouse in Albany, just down the street from The College of Saint Rose, where he studied music.

Mountain Bike Pioneer Leaves Imprint

CUPERTINO, CAPerhaps no one knew mountain biking pioneer John Finley Scott better than longtime friend Vance Sprock. Sprock, current owner of the Cupertino Bike Shop in Northern California, met its previous owner Scott for the first time in 1974. Scott was serving as chairman of the Davis Double Century. I was a young 16-year-old and soon-to-be budding cyclist, Sprock said. When I registered for that event, I recall reading this beautifully crafted route description. I wondered about who had written this entertaining, witty and insightful guide. Thus was the beginning of a lifelong friendship, cut short last year when convicted felon Charles Kevin Cunningham murdered Scott. Cunningham was sentenced in early December to 31 years, four months to life for Scotts death. Scott was 72 years old.

ChiTrib Blogger: Should Catholics Go Vegetarian on Fridays?

Yesterday my colleague Noel Sheppard noted that some Anglican bishops are urging their flocks to go "carbon" free during Lent. Along the same eco-insanity line, Chicago Tribune's religion blogger Manya Brachear submitted a post on Tuesday wondering if there's a "moral obligation" that Catholic priests have to urge their parishioners to go "fishless" or vegetarian on Fridays given concerns about mercury contamination:

Roman Catholic bishops once urged parishioners to observe meatless Fridays as a year-round act of penance. Since Vatican II, bishops have upheld meatless Fridays only during Lent, the 40 days leading up to Easter. The only exception is fish, prompting an annual run on seafood markets and a slew of fish fries in place of church potlucks.

But the dangers of eating tuna and swordfish, which scientists say is loaded with mercury, might be more flagellation than bishops had in mind.

Crowd hits the Skywalk for annual golf outing

More than 1,700 golfers teed off in the middle of downtown Des Moines this morning as part of the 23rd annual Skywalk Open Golf Tournament.

The miniature golf event, totaling 54 holes spread over three courses and 3.2 miles of downtown walkways, drew competitors ranging from new Tiger Woods-wannabees to entire families whove made a habit of mid-winter togetherness.

Just say no to two-tiered TV

Check out my blog posting on the subject (http://carmenbranje.blogspot.com).

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!

We live in capitalist/socialist mixed society and how we mix this is very important, if you don't teach kids or heal people, why are your hands in my pockets. If you can't make it in the private free market then you don't deserve to exist, please find other work. I could see news like CBC being supported, as that is a necessary service, but CORNER GAS???? Why is my tax money going to CORNER GAS??? I though that show was a huge hit in the states, but still they get government handouts?? This is insanity.

No wonder Canadians taxes are so high and yet our health care system generally sucks. All of our money is going into private hands as 'subsidies' and 'levies' rather then to public institutions that need it.

Sales up in Naples area in January, attitudes are upbeat

In January, home sales rose although prices fell in the Naples area, a report released Thursday showed.

There were 264 home sales last month, compared to 261 a year ago. That included 142 condo sales, compared to 126 in January 2007, a more than 12 percent increase.

“The buyers who are coming down for season haven't seen prices like this in a while," said Joe Ballarino, president and CEO of Amerivest Realty in North Naples.

The Naples Area Board of Realtors report released Thursday reflects sales made in Collier County through the Sunshine MLS, excluding Marco Island. It includes an overall market summary and breaks sales down by price and geographic area carved out by zip code.

In January, homes priced at less than $300,000 saw the biggest jump in sales -- from 81 a year ago to 103.
