Sergeant who sued family after slipping loses job appeal

Eichhorn went to the home of 1-year-old Joey Cosmillo Jan. 9, 2007. The boy had fallen into the backyard pool, and his mother had dragged him out and called 911. While watching rescuers work to revive the boy, Eichhorn slipped in a puddle caused by his rescue, fell and broke a kneecap.

Although the city or its insurer paid all her medical bills and she lost not a single day of pay, she sued the child's grandparents, who own the home where the accident happened, accusing them of negligence.

Mark Schlueb, Rene Stutzman and Amy L. Edwards of the Sentinel staff contributed to this report.

Video shows Iraqi kids training as terrorists

Video shows Iraqi kids training as terrorists Insurgents also use women, U.S. official says BY STEVE LANNEN McClatchy Newspapers

BAGHDAD -- A U.S. military spokesman said Wednesday that Iraqi insurgents are increasingly relying on women and teenagers to undertake suicide attacks, and he released two videos that he said showed how insurgents have drawn children into their circle.

One video showed footage of boys in black masks learning terrorist tactics. The other showed a boy being rescued from his kidnappers, apparently filmed by an Iraqi or American soldier.

Rear Adm. Gregory Smith stopped short of calling the use of women and children in attacks a trend. But he said recent high-profile attacks, including the double bombing last Friday of two pet markets in Baghdad, have drawn new attention to the tactic.

LAST night after her uncontested "victory" in Florida, Hillary Clinton was introduced by... Alcee Hastings, removed from by the Senate in 1998 after impeachment from* in the House, under a heavy cloud of suspicion of bribery when he was a federal judge. (A bit of the colourful background here.) Bill Clinton pardoned Mr Hastings' alleged co-conspirator on his last day in office.

Doesn't Ms Clinton have any slightly less dodgy-looking Floridian backers? Or if slightly suspect they must be, ones whose former associates had not been pardoned from federal prison by her husband?

Our view: Topsfield should get on rail-trail bandwagon

Wonder whether those who proposed laying down the first street grids had to deal with the same fears that arise anytime someone proposes turning an abandoned rail line into a bike trail? Probably not, or else we'd all still be walking everywhere.

Topsfield is the latest focal point in the debate over rail trails. Creating such pathways makes sense for several reasons — encouraging people to ride their bicycles rather than get in their car whenever they need to get someplace, is good for the environment; providing people with a place to ride, run or walk is good for their health. Yet inevitably the cry goes out that such trails will attract hooligans and predators.

Such protests usually come from those whose homes abut the abandoned rights-of-way. They certainly wouldn't want trains running along those old tracks again, but they'd prefer they not be used for any other purpose either.

Public provides input on planning future

They expect to see more traffic with an improved Highway 191 and fear their taxes will rise as development comes. Most want to see commercial development held to the Highway 191 corridor.Harvey Allen, Sue Makin and Sandy Dietering discussed the impact the new port would have and the possible impact of mining if it resumes in Courtland. They see housing demands and water as big issues. They also want to keep agriculture alive and flourishing in the Mid-Sulphur Springs Valley. They do not want noise and light pollution, overpopulation, nor do they want to see Elfrida incorporate and become its own city providing services that would increase taxes. At another table, James Guzz and Robyn Gibbons were talking in their group about encouraging economic development of environmentally-friendly industries to bring jobs to the area and even county support of work-at-home computer jobs.

Soldier's words from Iraq can inspire us all

At the end of each of those briefings, the chaplain introduced "The Hero of the Day," a fallen soldier. That part always held Bart Newman's attention.

Day after day, month after month, the men's stories haunted Newman. He was a husband and father just like many of them. They hadn't gotten out alive. Maybe he wouldn't either.

He thought about his 18-month-old daughter, Kate, and what he would say to her about life if he didn't come home to say it.

Bart Newman had a lot to say about God; about choosing a husband and about what she might do with her life.

He told his baby girl to make Jesus the center of her life because there was nothing more important than figuring out where she'd spend eternity when she died.

He told her about his relationship with her mother, Jules, as he calls her; that he believed we could have marriages of passion, devotion and love if we'd only see our relationship with our spouse the way God does and not the way the world does; and instead of asking what she would do with her life, ask herself "how will eternity be different because of me?"

The God that Bart Newman hoped Kate would one day believe in was the same one at the center of his prayers.

A nation decides

Obama was first to offer a tax rebate plan designed to stimulate spending.Yet Obama is suddenly placing a renewed emphasis on his opposition to the Iraq war. Through targeted television commercials, as well as speeches, Obama is seeking to remind voters that Clinton supported the war in Iraq. His big name supporters are joining in, too, with Senator Edward Kennedy raising Iraq in speeches he is making on Obama's behalf.Health care remains a critical issue, especially with the exit from the race of Edwards, who had made it a top priority. Advisers to Clinton and Obama said that they viewed health care as a strong way to court Edwards' supporters, and that they would be hitting the issue accordingly. MoneyTHE Tuesday contests will test the financial resources of Clinton and Obama as never before.

Literary arts: Solid foundation laid

For anyone desirous of a single volume for the study of Emancipation in Jamaican history, there is currently no better book. Thirteen 'heavyweight' intellectuals tackle the subject and yet there is no significant overlap. Indeed, every contribution enriches the reader.

Emancipation is the watershed experience of Jamaica as a slave society for centuries. Political independence is secondary because freedom is first for fulfilment of meaningfulness in life. What 1962 meant in essence was that the achieving of meaningful living became ours to decide and shape and achieve.

Rupert Lewis says this beautifully as he concludes his excellent exposition of Garvey's words immortalised lyrically by Marley: 'Emancipate yourself from mental slavery'. Lewis makes it clear that "issues of justice and economic opportunities for our people ...
