City to experiment with a new kind of bollard

With cyclists concerned about the possible danger of hitting bollards, the city plans to conduct an experiment with the posts intended to keep cars off bike and pedestrian paths.

Following the nod of the city's Internal Affairs subcommittee Tuesday morning, the city will look into new kinds of flexible material for the short poles placed where a bike path meets a road.

After hearing from cyclists concerned about the possibility of getting hurt by hitting the posts and another resident concerned about the city spending time and money pursuing something for one group, interim Assistant City Manager Dennis Beardsley suggested the city do an experiment.

A new bollard is already planned and budgeted to go in during the expansion of an upper Bidwell Park bike trail, he said, and the city could simply look into new materials for the bollard without spending any new money.

The detection of carbon nanotubes and workplace safety

More and more carbon nanotube (CNT) applications are moving from the research lab into commercial products. For example, CNTs can be found already in tennis rackets and bicycles, displays and TV screens, and numerous resins used by aerospace, defense, health care, and electronics companies.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept

Yesterday, DailyTech reported on VW's intention to bring a diesel-electric hybrid Golf to market. The hybrid powertrain would boost fuel economy to nearly 70 MPG on the small two/four-door hatchback.

BMW also has diesel-electric hybrids on the brain with its new Vision EfficientDynamics concept vehicle. The concept is based on the X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and uses a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder Variable Twin Turbo diesel engine. The diesel motor develops 204 HP and 295 lb-ft of torque.

Unlike the previous BMW X6 ActiveHybrid concept vehicle which was a full hybrid, the Vision EfficientDynamics is a mild-hybrid vehicle. A 15kw generator boosts total power to 221 HP, while regenerative braking steps in to help power the vehicle's electrical systems and recharge the rear-mounted lithium-ion battery pack.

REI's Pittsburgh Store Receives United States Green Building Council's ...

(CSRwire) Less water, less electricity, minimal construction waste and an urban location on the reclaimed grounds once home to a steel mill all helped REI's new Pittsburgh store reduce its environmental impact. Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI), a national retail cooperative providing quality outdoor gear and clothing, announced today that several green construction achievements for the store have earned a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI) Silver® rating from the United States Green Building Council. The 26,500 square-foot, two-story store in Southside Works, at 412 S. 27th Street, is the second REI store to receive LEED certification. In 2004, REI earned LEED-CI Gold for its Portland, Ore., store - the first retail store in the nation to receive that designation.

Democrats eyeing record turnout

And based on absentee voting to date, the Democrats could obliterate that record and even rival last week's GOP turnout of 444,090.

As of Thursday the state had issued 53,936 absentee ballots — 32,164 for Democrats and 21,772 for the GOP primary Jan. 19 — according to figures from the State Election Commission.

That means the Democratic absentee turnout is on track to approach 50 percent higher than the Republican absentee turnout. Absentee voting will continue through 5 p.m. today in the Democratic primary.

Charleston County Democratic Party Chairman Waring Howe called the absentee numbers "tremendous" and said they bode well for an eyebrow-raising turnout on Saturday.

well for an eyebrow-raising turnout on Saturday.

"We're looking forward to a record turnout that will equal or exceed the Republicans on Jan.
