| Gov. Mark Sanford's 2008 State of the State address
His work creates opportunities for the people who work there, and these businesses and individuals pay the taxes that make government services possible in the first place. Finally, I'd recognize my Cabinet for their hard work in administering their respective fields of government. We've had some changes in the guard since last year, so I specifically want to recognize Colonel Emma Forkner at the Department of Health and Human Services, Scott Richardson at the Department of Insurance, Buck Limehouse at the Department of Transportation, Kathleen Hayes at the Department of Social Services and Reggie Lloyd who we just nominated at the State Law Enforcement Division. Last year, in my second Inaugural Address, I said that I believed that the "keys to change were in our collective hands." I still believe that, but for keys to have value they must be used.
Skiers' quest to be the best starts tonight
The question is inevitable, no matter who Steve Ketchum talks with. Is this year's Aspen boys basketball team the best in school history? The Skiers (17-2 overall, 14-0 3A Western Slope) make one compelling case. They have won 15 straight and, by virtue of Friday's victory over Cedaredge, completed a perfect conference season and clinched their first league title in eight years. But hold off on crowning them just yet, the head coach said Sunday. "The history books have yet to be rewritten," Ketchum added. "For our kids, it's all about how far they go in the playoffs. They want to leave their mark and do something special. They took that first step." The next step begins tonight, when Aspen hosts Hotchkiss at 7 p.m. in the district tournament's opening round.
Student Waives Extradition In 2002 Md. Murder Case
A Long Island college student has waived extradition to Maryland, where he is wanted in a 2002 murder investigation. Adelphi University history major Nicholas Weaver was arrested last Thursday after being summoned from a math class on the school's campus. Baltimore County police say Weaver and another man are accused of fatally shooting David Baskin Jr. in July 2002 in what is believed to have been a fight over a girl. The other man was arrested last week. Weaver aspires to attend law school. Defense attorney Matthew Smalls insists Weaver is not guilty and looks forward to returning to Baltimore to clear his name. Getting to the bottom of the MTB wheel size brouhaha
What's the best wheel size for an off-road bike? It's not a new question. In the 1980s a couple of manufacturers - notably Cannondale - offered mountain bikes with 24-inch rear wheels, and in the 1990s GT briefly dabbled with an all-purpose, intermediate size called 700D. More recently, some downhillers have used 24-inch wheels to allow fatter tyres in more-or-less conventional frames. But the biggest controversy has come about as a vocal group of bike makers and riders have adopted bikes with 700C-sized rims, and two inch tyres, a combination that has become known as a "29-inch" wheel for the overall diameter of the combination. Two-niners, as they are also known, are currently among the hot topics in the MTB world with riders of all disciplines extolling their claimed virtues over the well-established 26-inch standard.
BuyOnceGiveTwice, The Charity Auction Website Creates New Fundraising ...
It comes from JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), one of the partner charities of BuyOnceGiveTwice and consists of a three day trip to the Italian Alps to watch World Cup skiing, complete with four star accommodation and flights for two. As this lot comes straight from the charity JDRF receives 90% of the resale value. There are many other lots now on the site from tickets to Glastonbury, or to see Kylie, or a box for 15 at the Eagles Concert at the O2 arena.Founder Mia Woodford comments, "I have a long history with charity events and auctions, and along with my business partner Emma Leschallas became increasingly frustrated at the thousands of charity auction lots being left unclaimed each year. BuyOnceGiveTwice is a simple idea that will help charities effortlessly increase their fundraising revenue."Emma continues: "We have a unique proposition to bidders – how else could the public have access to these kinds of exclusive items? We handle everything from listing and marketing the items to taking payment and despatching the items, so the charity needs hardly lift a finger.
