| Teen 'beggar' kills Pakistan's surgeon general in suicide attack
A teenage boy allegedly dressed as a beggar blew himself up Monday near a military vehicle carrying the Pakistani Army's surgeon general; seven other people also were killed. Meanwhile, gunmen burst into the offices of a British-based aid group in northwest Pakistan, shooting four local staffers to death and burning down their building. The assaults, both blamed on Islamic extremists, were the most serious outbreak of violence since parliamentary elections a week ago, in which the ruling party affiliated with President Pervez Musharraf was routed by two main opposition parties. In the attack that killed Lt. Gen. Mushtaq Ahmed Baig, the army's top medical officer, the "beggar" approached the general's car on foot on a busy street in the garrison town of Rawalpindi, authorities said.

Dick Warren; made ice cream and smiles at Cape Cod shop
Vanilla and chocolate were the most popular of the dozens of flavors Dick Warren made each summer at Four Seas Ice Cream in Centerville, but he put as much care into each taste that cooled a customer's tongue. "Our caramel is all just caramel," he told the Globe in June 2005. "I'm a little bit of a snob about ice cream. After all, I've been at it for 50 years." A high school English teacher and guidance counselor in the off-ice cream seasons, he took as much interest in the students he hired to work at Four Seas as he did in the work, hosting employees for a ski weekend each winter. Earlier this month, Mr. Warren traveled from his winter home in Sarasota, Fla., for the gathering, then stuck around in New Hampshire to ski with friends. He died Saturday en route to a hospital after a skiing accident in Bartlett, N.H., at the Attitash resort.
Courtney's Boy Blog
Courtney Love has spread a little of her own recently. Specifically within the younger men department. Courtney being Courtney, she's not mincing her words. In a rambling yet highly entertaining MySpace blog, the 43-year-old rock star spilled all on her wandering eye, and the fellas it tends to attract. First in the lusty firing line is 29-year-old acting talent Josh Hartnett. "Josh Hartnett is really kinda cute in real life - way more than I ever thought when I saw him out before and very, very nice," Court wrote. Next up is Scot screen boy James McAvoy, aged a tender 28 years. "Who the f*** wouldn't swoon over that kid! Wow!" Courtney enthused in an extract that's bound to have James blushing.
Along Cuba's highway, word of new president met with calm, hope
Like the traffic, life moves slowly along this Cuban highway. But on Sunday, word that the country had its first new president in nearly 50 years traveled fast, and encountered a range of opinions. For some residents in the towns and cities along the Carretera Central - the "Central Highway" - Raul Castro's elevation offers hope for change after decades of rule by his brother Fidel. But others favored calm and stability over any startling new approaches. The pothole-ridden highway runs east from Havana all the way to Cuba's second city, Santiago, on the extreme opposite end of the island, a journey of roughly 500 miles. Modern vehicles often have to slow down and wait for the chance to pass 1950s coupes, men on horseback, bicycles and rickshaws. In Santiago, 67-year-old retiree Alicia Menero was among a group of people lined up to buy ground pork at a government-run street stall.
Vintage charms of Lincoln Park
Warmth, charm and flexibility characterize a one-bedroom, one-bath unit at 401 W. Fullerton Ave. in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. Known as The Patricians, the 17-floor structure has 276 studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom units. A turnaround driveway outside the 1920s building allows vehicles to pull up under a wide canopy. In the lobby, a desk staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, provides access to the building's two towers. Around the corner from the lobby, in the wood-beamed elevator area, a stairway saved from the single-family home that once graced this property rises to the second floor. Its brass railing and decorative balustrade suit the wood-paneled elevators, each with a brass-paneled door. .
