Poor Snow Energizes Bike Park Expansion

WHISTLER, British ColumbiaWhistler Blackcombs winter season may be in full swing, but Rob McSkimming is already busy preparing for when the snow melts. McSkimming, vice president of business development at Whistler Blackcomb, is investigating the price of earth-moving equipment and looking for machine operators. McSkimming heads up the resorts Gravity Logic division, which leverages its bike park expertise to help other resorts develop theirs. And Gravity Logic is looking like it will have a very busy spring. There is going to be a huge push developing bike parks over the next few summers and we may be looking at buying earth-moving machines and hiring our own operators to help resorts get the trails in quickly, McSkimming said. Normally, our staff helps out working with local people, but given the number of resorts hurrying to get trails in, I think there could be a shortage of machine operators, he added.

Jupiter-Saturn-like Planets Discovered In Faraway Solar System Like ...

Most theorists think that the biggest planet in our solar system formed at Jupiter's location because that is the closest to the sun that ice can form. Saturn is the next biggest because it is in the next location further away, where there is less primordial material available to form planets."

"Theorists have wondered whether gas giants in other solar systems would form in the same way as ours did. This system seems to answer in the affirmative."

The fact that astronomers found the planets during the first event that allowed such a detection suggests that these scaled-down versions of our solar system are very common, he added.

Previously, astronomers had found four planets using microlensing; two of those were found by the Ohio State University-based MicroFUN group.

Court Roundup

The crime was in possessing them, he said in explaining the prosecution of Wixson.

Dawson said a couple of other students had been implicated but were underage and not subject to prosecution.

Wells said Wixson was suspended from school for a short time but is back attending classes.

The plea deal calls for Wixson to be sentenced to no worse than probation. Brunetti also promised him youthful offender treatment, which will remove the felony conviction from his record and seal the case file.

More: james blunt , Petra Nemcova

James Blunt tells British GQ that his sister couldn't get to Ireland so his solution was to sell her on eBay. He says:

"I came back to the flat where my sister was staying and she was crying because she couldn't get to a funeral in Ireland. The planes were on strike, the ferry was out of season, and there were no trains. I ended up whacking it on eBay: 'Damsel in distress seeks knight in shining armor! Desperate to get to a funeral in southern Ireland, please help!' The bids flooded in and the guy who won had a helicopter. He flew her to the funeral. That was three years ago. This summer they're getting married. That was the stupidest thing I've ever sold on eBay – my sister."

And just to remind you why we hate James Blunt, here are pictures of Petra Nemcova, whom he somehow managed to date.

Clips of murdered teenager on YouTube

Fighterrr8 includes a voiceover saying "happy slap TV", and shows Mr Alizada running up to a boy playing football in the park and hitting him in the head.

In a clip that features the group of youths calling themselves IVS riding on the top of a bus, Mr Alizada - aka Fighterrr - is mentioned by name and makes a gun gesture at the camera with his hand.

Other clips of the IVS gang show them involved in fights with other groups of youths.

The initals IVS apparently stand for Invincible Soldiers.

One of the brawls takes place at a bus stop in which most of the people involved are wearing school uniform and another happens in a park.

Mr Alizada, who came to the area from Afghanistan, was a pupil at Abbey Wood School, Eynsham Drive, Abbey Wood, until July 2006.

Design team taps WKU student

A college senior from Western Kentucky has been selected to work on a global design project to create a wind-powered water purifier to benefit impoverished areas that lack electricity.

Zach Pearl, who is studying mechanical engineering at Western Kentucky University, is part of the five-member team contributing to the project from around the world.

"Something like this could possibly be used where there isn't a safe source of drinking water," Pearl said. "This could save lives."

The research is still in early stages, he said, but the group is using computer-generated conceptual drawings to examine the possibility of harnessing wind power.

It's not Pearl's first attempt to design a water purification system. Last year he was part of a team that created a water purification system powered by pedals on a bicycle.

GMO Crops: A Growing Concern

If these foods are safe to consume, why do the majority of countries in the world have laws and regulations limiting the sale of modified foods?

The unpredictability of the human body to the uptake of genetically modified DNA is very dangerous. According to Jeffery Smith, author and the director of the Institute for Responsible Technology, in the only study ever conducted on humans consuming GM soybeans, the modified gene in the soybean transferred to human gut bacteria. Not only did the gene transfer but it also was incorporated on a steady basis, potentially changing the function of intestinal cells for an undetermined amount of time.

World hunger cannot be used as an argument for GM foods. Starvation is a political problem. A shortage of goods is not the cause of hunger in the world; poverty is.
