Clemson basketball mending a broken heart

Just days before Valentine's Day, the irony is amazing. Clemson and its fans had a chance to be shot by Cupid's arrow on Sunday; instead they were left with a broken heart.

The Tigers blew a 15-point lead in the second half and lost in double overtime to run their record to 0-53 in Chapel Hill, N.C. The extent of that crushing blow is not only lingering past Sunday, it's dominating everyone's thoughts.

I received a call from a Tiger fan on Monday afternoon that summed it all up. The woman told me it was a game “just too hard to watch."

To start, there was a horrific free-throw disparity (Clemson 1-for-7; UNC 31-for-36) that caused many to blame the referees.

There was the Tigers' lack of execution in the final four minutes. Clemson looked more like the guy that forgot where he parked his car at the mall than a Division I basketball team.

What Counts as an ‘Issue’ in the Clinton-Obama Race?

I will vote as though I don't have to worry about getting re-elected. 4. I will vote as one who is free of obligations to special interests that don't coincide with what I truly believe is in the public interest. 5. I will vote as though there are no cameras, I don't have to “posture" for sound bites, I can be myself and say what is true. 6. I will vote as though there are no consequences from the administration, other members of congress, or my financial contributors. 7. I will conduct independent research on issues, seeking out experts who have no political agendas, I will avoid sources known to “spin" facts, withhold information, or provide false information. I will make decisions based on fact and logic rather than dogma and political expediency. 8. I will demonstrate that I have the courage to say, “I was wrong" and “I changed my mind." 9.

Councilman MikeK Recalls Knievel Action Figure

I have been a customer for over 25 years and am a bit upset that we are not receiving official records for Kootenai County anymore, but instead for Spokane County. My interest is in Kootenai County and what is happening in our neighborhoods and at our courts. It seems that there is very little coverage of our area by your paper anymore, not what I am wanting to purchase daily. I have conferred with others and they are upset also. Please advise if this is a permanent change and if it is, all I have spoken with will be canceling their subscriptions too.
Sad for all/Jacqui.

Answer: In response to complaints about the disappearance of the Idaho public records in our newspaper, we're working on a solution. We believe we'll be able to publish them in our weekly zoned editions -- the Handle Extra and the Post Falls Voice.

Obama seen as more likely to beat McCain

As far as Obama dressing in traditional Muslim garb, I don't think Americans need to fear that he is not just as pro-Israel as Bush or any of the previous American presidents. Should Hillary Clintons campaign be responsible for distributing the, 'photo,' Obama could hit back with a photo of Bill Clinton wearing a yarmulke.

Nelson's gas severance tax: details

He said he felt the measure had the strong support of Beebe, who he believes would veto any major change to the 7 percent rate.) Nelson said he and his committee, the Committee for a Fair Severence Tax, plan to start collecting signatures during the May 20 primary elections. The committee will have over seventy-five members -- at least one from each county. It will be going for 70,000 signatures in order to meet the threshold of 62,000 needed to put the initiative on the ballot. Nelson said he expected the campaign for the initiative to cost about $1 million, which he will obtain through personal fund-raising efforts. Nelson expressed confidence that Arkansans would vote in favor of the measure. He also downplayed fears that a tax increase would cause gas companies to take their business out of state.

Open house marks TPD's 150th birthday

Being a police officer looks like fun, 7-year-old Hunter Ewert said Sunday after watching Topeka police operate a bomb robot and ride around on a Segway Personal Transporter.

"I like doing these kinds of things," Hunter said as he attended an open house at police headquarters with members of his family.

Civil Affairs in Israel, Public Relations Image Challenge

Politicians started following the leads of marketing firms and hiring PR consultants to help them dress, speak and convey their message - or image - and reach their target audiences. Politicians in Israel have only begun to take such strategies seriously in recent years, holding on strongly to traditional, informal ways. Golda Meir used to smoke cigarettes while being interviewed on TV. And years later in 1993, When Teddy Kollek ran for mayoral reelection in Jerusalem, he hired a very young and recent army press-corps graduate as his PR director, and a lay art staff to design his posters, many of which were made by hand. He also smoked cigars publicly. Israeli candidates for prime minister started hiring American consultants as far back as 1977, but it wasn't until the 1999 elections, when Binyamin Netanyahu hired Arthur Finkelstein and Ehud Barak brought in James Carville, Stanley Greenberg and Bob Shrum, that top American consultants totally revamped the Israeli electioneering process to follow American marketing strategies.
