Experts and amateurs who manage the University of Vermont's online archive of historical photographs are still looking for a new crop of curators, ages 6 to 96. They also want your photo albums. Geology professor Paul Bierman, one of the founders of the Landscape Change Project, said the collection was designed from the ground up in 1999 to sow interest among authorities and novices, teachers and students, historians and curiosity-seekers. On Tuesday, Bierman and his UVM faculty colleague, Christine Massey, will lead a workshop for home-schooling parents in a hands-on scavenger hunt through their Web site. "A big part of our mission is to disseminate successful educational models," Bierman said. "Kids see old pictures of their town, of places they know -- and they start asking questions.
'My Favorite Dog': Dueling Rhymers
I'm also not crazy about library supporters breaking their promise (made after key people in this town conspired to shoot down the community center advisory vote a few years back) not to seek public money for their building. However, I still believe this is an exceptional deal: $3 million will get you a $6.3 million building. Dunno when we'll get another chance to address this dire need. The public safety bond, on the other hand, is a no-brainer. Gotta have it. .
RAGBRAI liability issue still worries county officials
County officials representing towns along this summer's RAGBRAI route are still worried about liability issues involving bicycle riders, but they hope the Iowa Legislature will address the problem this year. This summer's seven-day bicycle tour doesn't pass through Crawford County, where the county's board of supervisors passed a resolution in October banning RAGBRAI or "any event of like kind and nature." .
Shannon Matthews, Madeleine McCann And Haut De La Garenne
A man helping in the search for missing schoolgirl Shannon Matthews is believed to have been crucified outside his house just yards from the nine-year-old's family home. Police are investigating the alleged assault of a 43-year-old man who neighbours claim was nailed to a wooden cross through his hands on Sunday night, and some locals claim the attack is related to the hunt for the missing girl. And the McCanns? Meanwhile, the McCanns, whose daughter Madeleine disappeared from their holiday apartment in the Algarve last May, have pledged their support to Shannon's parents. Writing in his personal online blog, Gerry McCann, said he and his wife Kate were praying for her safe return. "No matter what has happened to Shannon, there is no doubt she is extremely vulnerable," he added.
Leading Companies Deliver RIAs on Adobe AIR
Developers used Ajax technologies to build both the browser-based version of ShifD and the desktop version deployed on Adobe AIR. The New York Times Company is also developing a sophisticated blog reader on Adobe AIR. "ShifD solves the problem of shifting data between all of a user’s Web-enabled devices," said Michael Zimbalist, vice president, research & development operations, The New York Times Company. "We see a future for device-independent media, with convergence around the user experience and not around any particular delivery platform, which is why Adobe AIR is an excellent choice for ShifD." Other companies using Adobe Flex and Adobe AIR to create and deploy RIAs on the desktop include: Atlantic Records; BBC; Business Objects, an SAP company; Deutsche Bank; FedEx Corp.; Loyalty Management Group (Nectar); Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group's Neopets and Wilson Sporting Goods.

Another bank robbery Wednesday and again surveillance cameras get a pretty good look at the criminal who fled on a bike. It happened in Kalihi at the American Savings Bank on North King Street. The Last Word: Amy Winehouse Isn't Sexy, Kelis Is Jive Walking, and ...
What's happening everyone? Here we are as we welcome the end of another five days. From the beach house fire that killed seven college students in North Carolina to Dog the Bounty Hunter's use of the N-word in reference to his son's girlfriend during a heated argument to rumored talks of bringing Kobe Bryant to the Chicago Bulls, it was a week of highs and lows. Amy Winehouse Makes Maxim's Unsexiest Stars List Despite her reported battles with drugs, Amy Winehouse has had a good 2007 thanks to her critically acclaimed album Back to Black.
December 2007
For those of you who don't know what a linchpin is, it is a pin that binds a wheel to an axle for support and stability. Unfortunately for Sarah that wheel is becoming very squeeky, especially after yesterday's Cape Cod Times editorial in the Cape Cod Times titled "A Failing Grade." Under the leadership of Sarah Peake the number of affordable units created was 10 times lower than it should have been, with over a third of the units only available to the elderly. What can I say, I warned voters in my radio ads about what happened when Sarah and her rich elitist gay friends promoted gentrification Provincetown by saying "Is this what you want coming to your town." I never expected that it would come so soon. I agree with the Cape Cod Times. Sarah, along with her close friends and campaign worker machine people who work at the affordable housing programs on the Cape, get an F. Of course there will be no affordable housing when the management of Cape housing organizations use their resources to promote their friends' political campaigns, just like when Sarah's best friend, and a manger at a Lower Cape housing organization, used her management status to smear opponents of Peake (including yours truly) to her subordinates and some of the organizations low-income tenants.
Cars out as London mayor clears way for Paris-style plage and cycle ...
Visitors to London may not find the streets paved with gold but they could certainly find that a lot more streets have been paved, under proposals for the tourist heart of the capital. Cars will be banned from some of London’s busiest streets as part of a bold plan to create continental-style boulevards devoted to pedestrians and cyclists. Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London, plans to replicate Paris Plage, the beach created on a highway alongside the Seine each August, on the four-lane Victoria Embankment beside the Thames. He is also considering a ban on through traffic on a series of roads connecting London’s parks and main shopping areas, including Portland Place, which runs between Regent’s Park and Oxford Street. Speaking at Mayor’s Question Time at the London Assembly yesterday, Mr Livingstone said that he wanted to create attractive, tree-lined walkways in the style of Las Ramblas in Barcelona.
