MTB News and Notes: A conversation with Greg Minnaar; New power at ...

Minnaar still managed to give a post-race interview, despite the pain.

Then, in the off-season, Minnaar learned that Honda was ending its sponsorship of the G Cross-Honda team, the squad Minnaar has led since 2005. Minnaar's understudy, teammate Matti Lehikoinen, inked a deal to lead Intense Cycle's team, but Minnaar remained without a team through much of the fall. Salvation came from the California-based Santa Cruz Syndicate team — for 2008, Minnaar will ride alongside the hard charging, hard drinking duo of Steve Peat and Nathan Rennie.

VeloNews caught Minnaar on the phone as he was heading into a house party near his home in Pietermaritzburg.

Chris Matthews: Defeat Means Troops Still in Iraq--What About WWII?

Did you know that the US is still at war with Korea, Germany, Japan, Bosnia and Kosovo? Based on “Hardball" host Chris Matthews' recent claims, we are still at war with those countries and will be until our troops leave their soil. (h/t Weasel Zippers)

On his November 28 show (transcript here), MSNBC's Matthews discussed Iraq with Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, wondering when “will we be able to come home." In the process, the former Carter speechwriter said, “If we can't ever come home, we can't ever say we won."

Silly me, I thought WWII, the Korean War, the Bosnian War and the Kosovo War were over. I guess the US troops still stationed in those countries prove otherwise (bold mine throughout):

Fort Bragg Training Rocks Moore County

Loud booms are not as unusual as residents around Southern Pines might have thought Thursday evening when Fort Bragg training lit up the night sky.

"It was just usual training exercises," said Sgt. Jessica Fimbres, a public affairs officer (PAO) on the base. "I checked with Range Control, and that's all it was."

The booms seemed louder than normal to folks headed to the annual Spelling Bee at the Sunrise Theater on Thursday night.

Local residents have been used to loud noises the Army calls "the sound of freedom" since the 8-inch so-called "atomic cannon" was deployed back in the 1950s. It is no longer in use on the base. A 105-mm Howitzer has succeeded it, according to Paul Pomacelli, a civilian air traffic controller who works at Fort Bragg.

Mitt Romney to withdraw from presidential contest

We have so much division within the democratic candidates because no one has been chosen. I don't want it to become a situation where the candidates lose supporters if one or the other don't get the nomination. Because, I'm a democrat and I believe we should work together to win the race against the republican candidates. I understand there are differences in the candidates and that's why we must vote, but don't let a loss of one candidate prevent giving the support to the winning democratic candidate because it's only going to hurt us, the democrats. I support Obama's call for change and believe in him. I have news of Hillary's financial irresponsibility and don't think she'd make a great leader due to the fact that we need someone who in financially stable. There are many other reasons why I feel that Barack Obama is a better candidate.

China bans plastic shopping bags

Chinese authorities on Tuesday said they're outlawing the plastic shopping bag because of pollution and energy concerns.

China's State Council said the ban will start June 1. Firms that continue to sell, make and distribute bags thicker than 0.025 mm thick will be given fines and authorities may seize goods and profits, the State Council said.

"Our country consumes huge amounts of plastic bags every year. While providing convenience to consumers, they have also caused serious pollution, and waste of energy and resources, because of excessive use and inadequate recycling," the government said in a statement, according to Reuters.

"We should encourage people to return to carrying cloth bags, using baskets for their vegetables."

According to Worldwatch Institute, an environmental research group, plastic bags dissolve over 1,000 years.

Radio & TV Talk

I'm excited about the future at this station, it's a station I listen to all the time (I'm a talk radio guy) and the crew is a blast. Good stuff, and in hindsight I'm glad things worked out the way they did, I'm really happy.

And V-103/WAOK-AM are holding a combo town hall meeting later today from 6 to 8 p.m. about school violence. Frank Ski and Lorraine Jacques-White will preside. "We had been wanting to do it for awhile," Ski said. "With the recent incident at McNair High School, we figured it was a good time."

Gable Oaks violence | Austin: Security is owner’s obligation

Austin said he is trying to arrange a meeting Friday with representatives of Gable Oaks owner, Transom Development, to discuss security at the complex, which was the scene of a shooting at about 8 p.m. Sunday that left a 19-year-old man dead and a 22-year-old man critically injured.

Meanwhile, two city officers are regularly patrolling the Colleton Street complex off North Main Street 24 hours a day to "establish some sense of calm and stability," he said.

"Residents at this point are feeling uneasy," he said.

Mary Myers, president of the Gable Oaks tenants' association, said Tuesday she supports Austin's position "100 percent."

"I understand (the owners) don't want to spend money, but they're getting all this money," she said.
