Circle Dec. 9 on your calendar now. As for the Ravens, they were 13-3 before trotting onto their home field for a January playoff game after a restful bye week. They're 4-5 since. Last year's successful if predictable formula for Baltimore was power defense and clock-control rushing; this year's unsuccessful formula is pass-wacky futility. In the first half Monday night, the Ravens' coaches called 16 passes (attempts plus sacks) versus nine rushes; the 16 called passes netted 16 yards, the nine rushes 53 yards. You don't need to consult Ernie Adams in his off-limits office next to Bill Belichick's to determine the flaw in Baltimore's strategy that those numbers reveal. Steve McNair has a 75.8 quarterback rating, Kyle Boller a 75.6 rating; both are barely better than Miami's Cleo Lemon statistically, yet the Ravens' coaches keep calling passes.

Triathlete Royce Laine Jr. meets challenges head-on
Royce Laine, Jr., son of Royce Laine of Lake Isabella, has gotten a new lease on life through fitness, and has inspired people across the nation to get moving. A former triathalete who had planned on someday going pro, Laine had been honorably discharged from the Air Force as a disabled veteran due to cumulative back injuries when he had a freak accident that lost him the use of his legs forever. While at a local men's basketball game twelve years ago, Laine ran onto the court to celebrate his team's win and get on T.V. When he reached the floor, he dropped his t-shirt and slipped while picking it up, and was subsequently trampled by the crowd, crushing his spine. 'I got onto T.V. the wrong way,' he said. Until 2006, Laine used a power wheelchair that allowed him to get out of shape and become angry at the world.

Area Director Morgan Choat said, "Everyone needs to be registered for their Relay for Life teams by our next captain meeting on March 5 to make sure that we will have enough T-shirts for everyone on the teams." The different ways to register are online and by filling out the written form. Anyone with questions should visit http://events.cancer.org/rflchiltonal. This Web site can also be used to make donations to your local teams, who are all working extra hard to raise money for cancer awareness and survival.
