Tollway bike project closer to reality

The dream of building a bicycle trail to run nearly the length of the Interstate 355 south extension now has some money behind it.

The Chicagoland Bicycle Federation announced that Roll the Tollway, the bike ride to kick off I-355's opening in November, raised $107,243.

"The crazy idea that was thrown around of people riding on the tollway before it officially opened wasn't just a crazy idea," Rob Sadowsky, the federation's executive director, said.

Local bicycle clubs, including the south suburban Folks on Spokes and the Blue Island Bicycle Club, will receive about $38,000 from the fundraiser for events and advocacy campaigns.

But the bulk of the funds raised -- almost $70,000 -- will go toward construction of a 10.5-mile trail along the eastern edge of I-355.

The project is estimated to cost $7 million.

Researchers claim link between tsunamis and outer space

I mean, that sounds quite alarmist.

TED BRYANT: There I was sitting on Aceh, in Indonesia, Boxing Day at eight o'clock in the morning and if you told me a tsunami was going to come in, I would never have believed you.

And certainly if I was on Phuket in Thailand, I would have committed you to an insane asylum. If you wait long enough, a tsunami will come into any coastline of the ocean.

MARK COLVIN: Now, it's fair to say that the theories of the Holocene Impact working group are not universally accepted. How much work do you think you still have to do to get full scientific acceptance?

TED BRYANT: It'll be deadly. I'll be dead before the scientific community accepts what we believe. That's the nature of science, I mean, it's not stirring stuff out there, with people coming up with ideas and everybody gone...

McGhee inspires high achievers

When the Hearts right-back played the ball in behind the visitors' defence for Andrius Velicka to run on to, the yellow line had been breached and the Lithuanian striker had plenty of time to pick out the unmarked and onrushing Driver at the back post. The young Englishman's finish was of the highest quality, volleying the ball back across the prone figure of Graeme Smith and into the corner for the opening goal, his sixth of this campaign and Hearts' 499th SPL goal. Motherwell's obduracy and spirit were impressive, and kept clear chances for Hearts at a premium. Indeed, the only other time the home side threatened to extend their lead was when some neat interplay between the diminutive Andrius Ksanavicius and Velicka saw the striker through on goal with only Smith to beat, only to flick the ball against the Motherwell keeper.

Report: Calabrese sexually harassed Collier school employees

The "sparkplug for change" is what the NDN called Calabrese on 10-21-06 when it endorsed Calabrese in the November general election .

Well Sparkplug here's your opportunity to do one thing right...resign. If not, I can only hope the Governor's office will be contacted with a request to remove you from the School Board.

If you don't like that scenario, well you have pretty much played out your sad, tired, and phony defense of "I don't remember". The same defense used by Abbot and Steve "Mr. No Show" Donovan. Get yourself an attorney, the District won't help you on this one should you want to fight it.

Fight it or resign, the disgrace and shame that you have brought upon yourself, your wife and your family will stay with you forever. Have a nice life, Sparkplug.

Courteney buys Jennifer Aniston a $12,000 bicycle

Courteney Cox has bought Jennifer Aniston a $12,000 Chanel bicycle. The actress bought her 'Friends' pal the expensive pushbike after she expressed an interest taking up cycling. Futurepedia: The tragic nature of Nick Saban

November 2007: After a three-game losing streak against LSU, Mississippi State and Louisiana-Monroe, Alabama's $4 million-per-year coach Nick Saban challenged his players to unify and reverse their fortunes. "Changes in history usually occur after some kind of catastrophic event. It may be 9-11, which sort of changed the spirit of America relative to catastrophic events. Pearl Harbor kind of got us ready for World War II, and that was a catastrophic event." A school spokesman later clarified that Saban was not directly comparing the outcomes of football games to those invasions of the homeland. The thousands of innocent people killed in those events could not be reached for comment.

December 2007: Following an Iron Bowl loss to Auburn and an Independence Bowl loss to Colorado that ended the Crimson Tide's year with a five-game losing streak, Saban summed up the disappointment of his first year at the helm of the storied program by saying it felt like "riding off the top of the Empire State Building on a bicycle that had no seat, and I landed on the pole that held the seat when I hit the ground." A school spokesman later clarified that Saban was not directly comparing the inept first season to fantasy dares that third-graders make in their elementary school cafeterias.

Friday Legends — Rodney Cress

China Grove Junior High track coach Harry Bame stared at his stopwatch one spring afternoon in 1963.

The watch was still functioning, but his brain couldn't process what his eyes were telling him.

Ninth-grader Rodney Cress had just run 100 yards in 10-flat, something Bame had never witnessed in a junior high track meet.

The world's fastest human, Bullet Bob Hayes, lowered the mark for the 100 to 9.1 seconds in 1963, but here was a ninth-grader from Rowan Mills with zero track training, with no clue how to get out of the blocks, running 10-flat.

"I'd always run or rode a bicycle everywhere I went, and I guess all that pumping my legs made me fast," Cress said. "I always was faster than the other kids, but I had no idea how fast I was until the day Coach timed me.
